New Web Image Format Coming?
If you've worked on the web and gotten into the web image formats, you probably know what's what. Well, there may be a new player on the horizon: Google. They came up with a format similar to JPEG called WebP. They claim: "WebP typically achieves an average of 39% more compression than JPEG and JPEG 2000, without loss of image quality." From what I've seen so far, I'm impressed. Check out the WebP home page for image comparisons and more: http://code.google.com/speed/webp/index.html
So how do I make these WebP images, you ask? Of course this is new tech that will need browser support, etc. and may be some time in coming. Google offers a binary for Linux x86 (64-bit) (Windows coming soon). Don't expect to open Photoshop CS something and save it as WebP
Something to think about.
